I was excited to try Wilfred's as it had recently reopened. I went in and the cashier asked me for my vaccine passport. I told her that I was just getting takeout. She said she still needed to see it. As I was showing her...my passport, I noted that her request was unusual because I had never been asked for it for take out before. What she said was unbelievable: "Well, we ask for the passport because people eat in here and they usually do that taking off their masks". My response was" Yes, people do take off their masks to eat which is precisely why you need to show the passport when you actually dining in and not when you are picking up food because you would not be taking off your mask." She then told me that I could leave if I wanted to and she would not be offended? It is astonishing that people don't seem to have the capacity to listen or have any common sense. I was really tired and could not tell if she was just stupid or being sarcastic and rude. Normally, after someone tells me something so rude and stupid, I would tell them what I thought or leave. This has been the worst service I have had in Edmonton. I have to say Edmonton's hospitality is generally excellent, so this was surprising. I was honestly too tired in that moment to argue with anyone, and had nothing in my fridge after coming back from a long trip, so I ordered a couple of things to go. The food did not make my experience any better. I had a mediocre mac and cheese. It was cooked well enough and had the right consistency, but lacked seasoning and I could not detect all the wonderful cheeses that were supposed to be in it. It was one note and more creamy than cheesy. I had it the next day, but I was told that it was good for 2-3 days and only needed to be reheated. I also ordered the eggplant parm sandwich with and apple kale side quinoa salad. The sandwich was OK, but it was a bit soggy and did not have the crunch I would expect from a breaded eggplant. I could not taste the salsa verde. The salad had barely any apple in it, so it was just kale, some quinoa with a light salad dressing. Nothing was awful, but most things were barely average. The only solace I have is that I did not spend a lot of money because the prices are reasonable. I never say never, but it is highly unlikely that I would return. Further, the tables are not well spaced, so at this time I would be concerned about COVID-19. Had the service been better, I would have given at least a 2, most likely a 3 because the food was not horrible, but it was not good enough to warrant anything more than a three.
