Ah, the Sushi Master!

Ah, the Sushi Master! This establishment, located in Granville Clocktower Centre and immediately adjacent to Kathy’s Sandwich House, was brought to my attention a few months ago by my dear sister. I believe she found the name rather humorous? Nevertheless, I’m always curious to try...places that purport to be a “master” of something; thus, you just knew ol’ PookyCake would hit up the Sushi Master sooner or later. I think this establishment is fairly new, having taken over the space previously occupied by Laki Poke. Indeed, one might assume the Sushi Master would do relatively well in our COVID times because it is, for all intents and purposes, a takeout establishment; though, there is a long bar-length table by the window should you choose to dine in (and I did see one person doing just that). There is also a large cooler inside with various pre-made sushi items for those “on the go.” While the pre-made sushi rolls were tempting, I opted to order from the extensive menu and settled on the Alaska Roll and Black Rice Dynamite Roll. Their website also claims Aburi Oshi to be on the menu; however, no such item exists on the physical menu in the restaurant – and that’s probably a good thing because, really, you can’t compete with the likes of Miku or Bistro Sakana. In any event, both rolls were ready in a little over 5 minutes, so they’re definitely efficient – I’ll give them that! In terms of presentation, I think the offerings at Sushi Master are pretty decent for a quick-serve establishment. Both rolls were packed nicely and the ingredients were bright and vibrant. The Alaska Roll featured imitation crab, masago, avocado, smoked salmon, seaweed and rice. Of the two rolls ordered, this one was my favourite because the rice was moist (though a little on the cool side), and the smoked salmon clearly fresh. The Dynamite Roll was decent – I appreciated the light crunch of the tempura shrimp – but I found the black rice to be a little thick and kind of hard, and this detracted from an otherwise satisfactory roll. FOOD: 3/5 SERVICE: 3/5 VALUE: 4/5 RECOMMENDATION: Within the context of quick serve sushi, I think Sushi Master is on the higher echelon, well above your typical mall sushi. Unlike sushi found in a mall, the offerings here are fresh and decently prepared. If you have a craving for sushi and are in a rush, then consider giving the Sushi Master a shot!
