White Spot has been a BC original since 1928. When Nat Bailey transformed his Model T into a traveling lunch counter, I very much doubt he envisioned the level of success “White Spot” has enjoyed over the past 92 years. Indeed, the restaurant has gone...from a modest truck to a provincial chain with over 100 locations. It is also regularly featured in publications like the Georgia Straight and Inside Vancouver, typically touting the restaurant as a “must try” for its burgers and Triple O sauce; and, really, who could blame them for making such a recommendation? White Spot’s Triple O sauce is mysterious and tantalizing to the taste buds. The White Spot at Oakridge Centre is nice for a couple of reasons: 1) It allows you to escape the usual fast-food offerings; and, 2) It offers patrons a nice place to sit, relax and enjoy their meal after wandering around the (mostly dead) mall. It’s definitely a nice upgrade of sorts from the atmosphere vacuum that is the Oakridge food court. Because this unit of White Spot is attached to a mall, it is significantly smaller than your typical White Spot restaurant; however, the general atmosphere and vibe of the space remains the same. In short, it remains a space where you can bring a family to enjoy a hearty meal, which is exactly what we did. We ordered the Nobashi prawns to start, a Legendary Burger, and the BC Chicken Burger w/ yam fries. All items arrived in good time and were, in my view, vintage White Spot. The Legendary Burger, in particular, was a treat because it exemplifies some of this restaurant’s best and highlights how and why it’s been around for nearly a century: The beef patty was allowed to speak for itself while the Triple O sauce was used more to complement the beef. Service during lunch was a little below standard, but this might be because it was quite busy? I’ll give our server the benefit of the doubt here. FOOD: 4/5 SERVICE: 3/5 VALUE: 4/5 RECOMMENDATION: While I’m not quite sure I’d add White Spot to any “must dine” itineraries if visiting BC, I will vouch for their food. Viewed within the context of a family restaurant, I think White Spot punches well above its weight. The menu is varied (so as to appeal to any number of tastes), but they don’t really seem to do any one thing badly. The Legendary Burgers are always a treat; the milkshakes are excellent, smooth and creamy; and their kiddie “Pirate Pak” is sure to please the little one! Recommended.
