The Pink Elephant is located in the Marine Gateway complex at the corner of Cambie Street and Marine Drive, the southern boundary of Vancouver. We were out for a movie and dinner on this Saturday evening in January. We decided on the Pink Elephant for...dinner because we had a gift certificate and the theatre was upstairs. We arrived around 5:30 and there were about 12 people in this small 30 seat restaurant. When we left around 6:15, there were about 20 people. My spouse and I shared 4 dishes. • Som tum malagor($12.95) Papaya salad - with green beans, tomato wedges, lettuce leaves, shredded carrots and peanuts with a tangy lime and fish sauce dressing; a little too much dressing for my liking. The salad was tasty but just okay. This dish is on the smallish side with enough for 2 small portions to share. I would rate this dish at 3 out of 5. • Pad Thai with shrimp. ($15.95 and14.50 for other proteins). There were 6 u20 size shrimp, scrambled egg, tofu and the noodles. A tasty dish with the slight tang of the tamarind sauce. 3.5 out of 5 rating. • Pad Namman ($14.95, prawn option $16.95) - beef stir fry with snap peas, bell peppers, pineapple chunks, black beans and celery. A tasty dish but just average. 3 out of 5 rating. • Jasmine rice for $2.50 Protein options include chicken, beef, tofu, shrimp or mixed seasonal vegetables. The total bill was $48.67 before the tip. Breakdown of rating: Quality and taste - average food with the best dishes being the Pad Thai and the beef stir fry. Value vis-à-vis portion size - just average with the papaya salad being overpriced for the portion size. Service - good service. Servers checked on us and our water cups were frequently filled. Food came in a timely manner. 3.75 out of 5 rating. I would rate the overall food experience as 3.25 out of 5. Notes & Tips • Charge for tea • No wifi • Open kitchen • Lunch and Happy Hour specials. Also set menus for 2 or 4 persons. • Check website for additional information. • Unisex washroom. Wheelchair access maybe tight and there are no assist bars. • There is pay parking or street parking with restricted hours. I believe you can get a few hours free parking with a purchase from the T&T supermarket or Shoppers Drug Mart. • The Canada Line stops at Marine Gateway • We were at Pho 37 Vietnamese restaurant in Richmond a month ago and enjoyed the Vietnamese version of the papaya salad much more.
