We have not had Japanese food for a long time. I remembered Kamei Royale from when they used to be on Burrard Street and it used to be very good. We are not fans of sushi or sashimi so we were looking for a restaurant...where we could have a good selection of cooked dishes. Kamei Royale offers free parking after 6:00 in the parking lot right beside their restaurant so this is a very nice bonus. The service from our server Bonnie and her supervisor was also exceptional. The both took very good care of us. The room is beautifully decorated in an Asian style and the waitresses all wear kimonos. It really is a great ambiance for a nice meal. We were there during happy hour which goes until 6:30. We ordered a couple of glasses of house wine. You can do the a la carte menu of cooked food as a set menu that includes an appetizer, miso soup and rice for an additional $8.50. We both ordered off the set menu. We had appetizers of ebi-mayo shrimp fritters and sweet coated chicken kaarage. Both dishes were different than what we expected. The menu said tempura shrimp so I was expecting a tempura batter. Instead the batter was heavier and almost like a batter that you would find on a shrimp seafood platter in western food. The batter on the chicken kaarage was also very heavy. The miso soup was very good. For our entrees my husband had the black cod and it had a very strong taste to it. It almost tasted like it was off. My steak was good. Bonnie gave us a complimentary mango ice cream to finish our meal. My husband said that next time we probably shouldn’t go with the set menu but upon perusing the menu more closely I notice that with the exception of the items that you could apply the complete meal to there are not many dishes that appeal to us. For that reason we would not return to Kamei Royale. I liked it better when it was on Burrard Street.
