Nice dinner with the family tonight at Calton's. Roasted duck with crepes, garlic gai lan, and scallops shrimp fried rice. Not fine dining, but quite good, large portions, friendly service. Also got home style soup and mango tapioca dessert on the house. The place is...relatively clean (pretty good for a Chinese restaurant). It is spacious with probably some 30 tables of assorted sizes and can get quite loud when full. There seem to be 4 regular staff ladies that work all the tables, so they need flagging down when it gets busy, but that's Chinese style too. Otherwise, like tonight, it was only ¼ full at 8 pm Wed, and a couple of them had time to chat a bit. The portion sizes are 30-50% larger than many Chinese restaurants. The price point is low-medium to medium compared to similar places. The food is a little coarse or rustic compared to finer and pricier places. For example the gai lan is bigger (older), as was a previous dinner with pea shoots, and some of the execution is just a bit off the mark. Wok flavour is not bad. Overall very good and excellent value. Seems to be well attended by working and middle class Chinese. Very casual.
