Not my first time at the Slocan and certainly not my last. This area of East Hastings is one of my favourite walks, and what better way to fuel up than filling up with 2 easy over eggs (done perfectly), ham and toast (that I...could not finish) and two fluffy substantial pancakes. The platter also comes with hash browns that I asked to be left off my plate, because I knew I would not be able to find the room. The coffee is regular, pour out of the pot, no recipe required and the orange juice is cold and pulpy and the right fluid to wash down a platterful of food. The service was fast, friendly but not pandering. The waitress checked on our satisfaction twice, just enough to let us know that she cared. The food is not gourmet ... it is just plain good. My friend agreed that her House Omelet with ham, mushrooms and cheddar cheese was just right. You may find may find more attractive and eclectic decor in other restaurants, and more exotic choices, but sometimes comfort food with good service is all it takes to make your day. At $14.99, the East Van Breakfast may seem pricey, but it was all the food I needed for one day.
