As part of a very intentional plan to travel to Montreal from Toronto to dine at Le Roseline based on an exceptional prior meal (last year ), we were very excited to revisit this place. As it was a special occasion birthday, my husband had...reserved a table, informing them of that. We were greeted by the manager ( aloof but efficient) and seated at our table, right by the door - it was ok, but a more intimate table might have been nice. The atmosphere was relaxed and the ambience was great, with good jazz music at the right volume. It was comfortable, and we felt their provisions for covid were adequate and implemented well. Our server, Vincente, was great - acknowledging the special occasion ( with mention of saving room for dessert!) attentive and animated. He had a thorough knowledge of the wines and the food. We enjoyed a pre- dinner drink ( the bartender made a fantastic Vesper martini) and a few appetizers ( smoked trout pate, fries and truffle mayo- excellent- Squash soup was a bit thin and tasted basically like warm cream.. not a bad thing but not what was expected. Vincente offered to open a bottle of Beaujolais which was not on the per glass menu, and it was great. My husband ordered the fettuccine with mushrooms, rich but not overly so. I ordered the scallops, which was on the entree menu. ( so did the man at the table beside us ) When the entrees arrived, we were quite surprised to find two little scallops ($25) on the plate, along with tiny little charred bits of asparagus. The couple at the table beside us looked at us and we both laughed at the portion! It was actually fantastic, but for an entree? Maybe it should be offered as an appetizer. We enjoyed our meals, but opted to not have dessert. However, due to the occasion, the restaurant’s prior knowledge of the occasion, and the fact that we had selected that specific place to celebrate, it felt a bit indifferent. The manager never so much as came over to say a word of welcome, and as we rose to leave, didn’t even acknowledge us even though he was standing right there by the door as we left. So all in all it was… ok. It was good, but not great, and it’s likely we will find another place next time we return to lovely Montreal. Date of visit: October 2021More
