Let’s start with the beginning : quiet & subdued from the outside – discreetly tucked away in the depths of the east end, barely noticeable were it not for outdoor lighting which is very inviting. And then you walk in: a warm, enveloping space, primarily...black, with Edison lightbulbs, a very well appointed bar & barely enough space to fit 40 people. In one word: cozy. Like a womb. Owners obviously invested heavily in the decor - even the bathrooms, each with its own theme of ceramic tiles are inviting. & the star of the show is, without a doubt: Shashteu. The Maitre d’H cum Barmaid cum Waitress. Salt of the Earth. Warm smile, friendly approach. Just something about her that reminds you of the very best that French Canadian women have to offer. Her service was impeccable. The kind who came out of the restaurant to our car to bring us our doggy bag which we had forgotten. Don’t come across those types too often these days. Atmosphere is quiet and subdued as you’d expect from the description above, but with a twist: French music from the 80’s, clearly a deliberate choice, accompanies you throughout your meal. If you’re an aficionado of the Soirées C’est Extra, you’ll be in heaven. And the food: French fare. The kind you usually pay for dearly, but not here – prices are more than reasonable, considering the quality of the food & the service. We had the tomato soup & the brie in philo pastry, served on a bed of very fresh vegetables, and the veal kidneys in mustard sauce along with the Salmon (again resting on that bed of fresh vegetables) with blue cheese sauce (not à la "slathered all over it'', but served on the side, in its own little tumbler - a nice attention). A pure delight & portions were generous. This is definitely a must, for Montrealers and out-of-towners alike.
