First trip to Canada. Poutine is touted as the national dish. When in Quebec do as the Québécois do. So we ordered "The Retiree" version of poutine. In addition to the tradition French fries, cheese curds and brown sauce it was gussied up with pepperoni,...mushrooms and green peppers. Healthy, right!? Wrong! And not to my taste. Must be an acquired taste. Or maybe I needed more (and earlier) beers. The service at Pele Mele was good. We ate outdoors. There was only one waitress at mid-afternoon, but she managed the regular "I don't want to go back to the office" stragglers and tourists admirably. The restrooms at Pele Mele call into question the sanitary conditions of the kitchen. But we escaped unscathed. This seems to be a sports bar. Surprisingly, no local brews were available. If mainstream beer and standard bar food are on your Canadian bucket list, I can think of worse places to hang out in Gatineau.
