Thai Basil opened on Cornwall, Kitsilano, some 14 years ago & its sandwich board has stood outside its location signaling to those who pass by that’s Thai food is available, ever since. The change is now the board has a white piece of paper covering...the words “eat in” written next to the words “take out.” I would imagine a good bit of regular business has always been take out. The internal space has not much more than the essentials & it is not large, I imagine those who ate at the tables or sat along its small side bar, did not linger. Its location, across from Kits Beach & next to the bus stop, made it a convenient place for students & the younger democratic to pop in for a quick meal. I remember the time it opened vividly as my son had called to say he was bringing a woman he had recently met home to join us for dinner. They had obviously clicked & he was keen to introduce us. I had seen the new arrival to the culinary neighborhood, as I drove past often, as our home was on Point Grey Rd , an extension of Cornwall & thus just some blocks west. I said I will order Thai from this new place & you can pick it up en route home. It was January 2006. The wonderful woman, who is now my D-I-L, insisted on paying for the takeout, such a gracious gesture, which. along with the great wines we consumed, overshadowed the food we were eating. We have ordered take outs from TB since then & twice I popped in for a light lunch. Today I called to order an early dinner from TB, one because I like supporting neighborhood eateries in these tough times & I had not yet has anything to eat & to find out the new MO for procuring food. A most helpful & charming man helped me negotiate my choice which I arranged to pick up 10 mins later. The warmth & charm was not there in the person at the counter when I arrived for pick up. I asked for the man who had taken my order, hoping to recreate the earlier relationship of hospitality. I was told he was a driver & was out on delivery. I had been served by this woman before & previously experienced her removed service & wondered why the eatery did not have him as the “frontman”. I ordered the Pad T BKk with pork, tofu, sprouts, noodles with crushed nuts & four smaller prawns on top. It cost 11:95& & was so-so. I am, however, grateful to all eateries serving food to us at this time & think it can certainly hit the spot for a meal right now.
