Our server, Daphne, saved the evening. She was friendly, funny, enthusiastic and an avid supporter of the new menu. We visited this restaurant a few months ago and liked it. We liked it enough for a return visit. Now, to get this out of the...way; I know restaurants don't like getting a bad review. Well, diners don't like giving bad reviews. After all, we plunk down a sizable chunk of money, sometimes book for a special occasion, it's a big deal and an evening out, a lot can be riding on this one meal. This dinner a multi course tasting menu, a trial run of the new menu, was one of those "misses'. We started with a bowl of olives and another bowl of lightly pickled vegetables. OK. Next came some mediocre bread baked in house along with some chicken liver pate? mousse? puree? The presentation was completely off putting....a splat on a plate, although the charred onions were good. The warm salad of chicory and endive was a stand out. It would have been nice to have clean plates, though. Next came two pastas of the run of the mill mediocre variety. Again, no thought whatsoever to presentation. "We eat with our eyes first" is unheard of in this kitchen. The fish stew of sea bass, shrimp and octopus was fairly good but not outstanding or memorable although it did have a very rich broth, we've had better at lesser restaurants. We struggled to finish everything except the salad. And then came dessert. A small bowl of tiramisu was plunked down in front of us, with two spoons. We even commented on how this has to be the most overworked dessert, ever. We were assured it was 'authentic'. Aren't they all? We paid $85 each, before tax, tip and wine for a below average dinner. The room is lovely, and was practically empty. Maybe the obnoxious music has something to do with that. I wish this place well, for Daphne's sake, but we won't be back.
