We have been playing "tourist" in Toronto for the past few months, visiting a different area of the city each week. This weekend we were in the Junction area of Toronto. We walked from one end of the area to the other, and down each...side street, going into most restaurants and shops, looking to find places and things of interest to us. The area has really changed in the past decade and has managed to avoid the most of the mainstream chains that plague many areas of Toronto and other cities, homogenizing them into pablum. The Junction has managed to maintain and increase the selection of locally owned shops and restaurants, to its great credit. After walking into and by restaurants for several hours we ended up back where were parked and at the first restaurant that we had looked at: Cool Hand Girl. A very small restaurant with one person taking orders and two in the kitchen (one of whom also seems to serve). The menu is quite varied for such a small establishment with some additional items on the chalk board. The soup of the day (chicken broth with white beans and vegetables) was home made and as tasty as any that I have had in some time. The seemed to be almost no added salt and every vegetable could be tasted. Both I consider to be excellent when it comes to food. The sandwich that I had was the cheddar and apple chutney with avocado and it was absolutely brilliant. My companion had the haddock, but deconstructed, and I watched one of the most picky eaters who I know finish the dish, entirely! This is a hidden gem and one to be revisited, even if we have to go some distance to get there! ATB LIGMore
