This Shawarma place opened about 10 years ago while I was still in elementary school, my Grandmother lived up the road and we would venture there often. As a teen I was lucky enough to go to school about a 7 minute walk from the...restaurant, and boy did our highschol eat ALOT of shawarmas throughout those 6 years. I am now 27 and still this is my favourite place in the city to go, I now live in Quebec and my husband and I drive there 20 minutes away once a week (passed several other shawarma spots) for a sandwich. Now I’ve lived all over Ottawa, Kanata, West, East, South, Embrun (country) and now Aylmer, Quebec and I’ve tried most of them. My late husband (Hassan) was Middle eastern and he was very particular of shawarma places, and in fact we tried so many different places in and around Ottawa over the years that I can’t even remember them all. But at the time he passed we were die hard fans of either Mr. Shawarma on Baseline, or Shawarma Palace on Carling or of course the original on Rideau. However I prefer the plates at Shawarma Palace, I used to live downtown and would only go there if I wanted a shawarma. Now if I had to choose, i’d say that Mr. Shawarma tops the cake for their sandwiches and the Palace for their plates. You know it’s good when the local officers are there on the daily to dine! But those were the ONLY 3 places we would ever dare to eat shawarma in the city, because even if you think they can’t f**k up pita, garlic, hummus and yes even sometimes the consistency of the veggies.. trust me they def can and accompany that with dried meat and you’ve got a recipe for wasted money and a craving for a better one. Tho I do love the palace on Rideau, it is always so incredibly busy and the parking downtown sucks! So if I happen to be on foot in the area, I’ll always stop for one of their plates. But out of convenience, quality and consistency, I typically go for Mr. Shawarma. It’s very cleanly, the service is fantastic, quick and the quality is always consistent. Not to mention that they now have a points system that adds up fairly quickly, the points are called vicinity an are also available at other restaurants in the city or “vicinity” , you also get double the points if you pay with cash! So if you’ve never tried shawarma or you’re looking for a new shawarma spot or maybe just visiting Ottawa, you won’t be disappointed with any of my suggestions. I am a big foodie and I don’t mess around when it comes to food, and neither should you :) Mr. Shawarma and Shawarma Palace all have other chains that have opened in the city, but the ones I mentioned are the originals and are the best of the bunch. However if you’re closer to one of their partnering establishments, they will be the next best thing. I hope you enjoy your food as much as I do!More
