Toby's has a chameleon-like quality to it, depending on what time of day, or what day of the week you drop in. During the day, it's fairly quiet, even intimate. In the evenings, it morphs into a sports bar, but the decor suggests that Toby's...has higher aspirations. Evening entertainment is various, but often quite good. Although there is a happy hour menu, the one thing that doesn't change is the quality of the food. While often overlooked, pub food can be on par with many of the better restaurants, and for the most part, Toby's delivers. The Wild Salmon Burger is one of the better ones available on "The Drive" and the Thai Prawn Salad is a delightful blend of (slightly)hot, sweet, and savoury. Toby's does a lot of things well, so it is hard to pin down a specialty. There are lots of possible choices for vegetarians, which is really commendable. Warning! The French Fries are addictive. There isn't a huge list of desserts, but those on the little table menu will satisfy anyone. Expect an impressive list of beer and wine--perhaps not as extensive as specialty ale houses, but certainly respectable. The interior decor merits a mention, with its interesting maritme flavour. This fits well into the Grandview and Cedar Cottage neighbourhoods, sympathetic with the area's working class roots. No review would be complete without mentioning the people that make it all happen. The staff are particularly adept at what they do. Presumably, their patience and humour are honed to a fine edge dealing with those who need to drown their sorrows from time to time. During the day or in the evening, you will be treated to attentive service and a friendly atmosphere.
