Using the term "pub" or even its own chosen description "tasting room" doesn't suit Bitter. It is an old fashioned bar, the kind that used to have signs saying "Ladies and Escorts". The location is definitely dodgy -- pretty much at Ground Zero for the...downtown eastside. There is definitely lots of character to the neighbourhood. The decor is early forties basic, including metal stools to sit on. Still, it works. They have a terrific selection of beers from all over the world and at all price points. Staff were all very knowledgable about the selections and not afraid to make a recommendation for something new. Food is very much bar food -- pickled eggs, devilled eggs, chilli, pork crackling, ploughmans lunch, sausages. We were there as a group so were able to sample a wide selection. All very good tasting, if not real healthy for your arteries. Prices were reasonable. Beers varied from $6 to $32 (yes, really). They have flights of 3 x 5 oz tasters. Pilsners flight was $11, stout flight was $15. There is a modest list of wines and beer-based cocktails. The menu includes a few more substantial items, so it would be possible to have a meal. Food is clearly not the focus. It is all about the beer, and they do that very, very well.
