My boyfriend and I had tickets to a concert we were really looking forward to going to. We live outside of the city and don't go into Vancouver but this was meant to be a special night for us to enjoy our first concert together...post covid. The wait staff was lovely, we have no complaints about them. What ruined our night was the manager. My boyfriend and I ordered the dragons breath wings and the meatballs to start and ordered a burger to share. The restaurant did not provide wetnaps or a finger bowl to clean our hands with after eating chicken wings so my boyfriend went to the washroom to wash his hands. While he was in the washroom the fire alarm in the restaurant went off. I will also add that I was still sitting at the table finishing my wings when the fire alarm went off and not a single member of the staff did anything when the fire alarm went off, the manager was standing right next to my table when it went off and she didn't say anything to myself or any of the other patrons in the restaurant. The fire department showed up and everyone continued as normal which was pretty concerning given that there could have been a potential emergency. Again my boyfriend was in the washroom when the fire alarm went off so he quickly washed his hands and came back upstairs to the table. Given that there didn't seem to be an emergency I then went to wash my own hands. I would like to point out at this point that I hold 2 bachelors degrees, one in criminology, and the second in forensic science. What the manager did next was so wrong on so many levels. While I was in the washroom the manager decided that because my boyfriend was the last person in the washroom he had been vaping in the washroom causing the fire alarm to go off and accused him of doing so. They asked for his ID and contact information which he mistakenly provided because he was trying to be cooperative. I have been with my boyfriend for 4 years, we've been dating since high school. My boyfriend does not vape. He does not own a vape. How can a person who doesn't have a vape, vape in a restaurant bathroom? Despite our incessant pleading of this fact the manager would not listen to a single word we said and continue repeating the same sentiment over and over again that she smelled vape in the bathroom, staff smelled vape in the bathroom and they saw vape clouds. I didn't see or smell any of this when I went to the washroom and I suspect that it was a case of confirmation bias impacting their view. The manager continued to complain about the fact that she'd have to write and incident report ( a part of her job as a MANAGER) and continuously implied that the owner would be in contact with my boyfriend to pay any sort of fine the fire department may issue. Again, they accused my boyfriend, a paying patron of the business, of doing something he did not do and were completely unwilling to consider any alternative hypotheses to the scenario. This is not at all how a proper investigation is conducted and is actually how people end up incarcerated for crimes they did not commit. Fire alarms can be faulty, people often smoke out the back of a restaurant, I know people who serve and it's not uncommon for waitstaff to vape in bathrooms (not accusing the waitstaff of doing such, just saying), also this is a restaurant where food is being cooked could it not have been the kitchen triggering the fire alarm! All of this is to say that the manager of Romer's not only ruined our meal but our entire night by embarrassing us in front of the entire restaurant for something that was literally impossible for my boyfriend to have done, she was rude, unapologetic and completely unwilling to listen to us at all. I would never return to this establishment for this very reason. P.S. I watched the bartender break a glass in the ice bin and not clean it up, be careful.
