El Charro is a family-run traditional Mexican street food spot in Cabbagetown. Toronto. This is a small restaurant with limited seating capacity but this place does exude an authentic Mexican taqueria vibe. The menu written on the wall has tacos, pambazos, tortas, huaraches, and burritos....We went on a Sunday for lunch and the place was rather quiet so we didn’t have any trouble finding a table. Tacos are $4 each, $10 for 3. They have grilled chicken, grilled beef, chorizo, and pastor tacos. We opt for the grilled chicken and chorizo tacos. Both chicken and chorizo had basic toppings and both types of tacos were nice and juicy. They also offer four types of homemade salsa (sauces); they are to the spicy side but are very flavourful. We also ordered torta al pastor ($13.00)—featuring a judicious amount of marinated pork, grilled onions, melted cheese, pieces of pineapple, lettuce, and slices of tomato encased in an Italian-style bun — served in a basket, allowing for easier enjoyment. Although it can get messy while eating, this is a satisfying sandwich and another reason to visit this very adept neighborhood restaurant. For drinks, they have a wide selection of Jarritos flavors like mango, pineapple, lime, etc., in addition to refreshing homemade Jamaica agua fresca (a cold slightly sweetened tea made of steeped hibiscus flowers). They also have some Mexican candy like Vero Elotes lollipops. This isn’t a fancy spot but those looking for a comforting spot for good tacos can surely turn to El Chorro.
