Dad’s Soups and Sangys had been on my radar for the better part of 5 years, so I was most pleased when I finally had an opportunity to patronize this local gem. I admit that it was primarily the name that drew me – there’s...just something fun about the word “sangys.” It fills you with a child-like joy. How about a nice soup and sangy for lunch? Count me in! (What can I say, PookyCake is easily amused!) The interior of Dad’s Soups and Sangys is fairly basic, or what I’ll call “no frills.” The flooring is grey laminate; the walls are painted white; the tables are kind of small, but can comfortably fit 4 patrons enjoying their soups and sangys; the chairs match the general décor in that they’re off-white in colour, but are very cozy; the menu is posted on a large TV screen behind the cashier’s counter; and there’s plenty of navy-related memorabilia posted about, which is no doubt a nod to the founder’s past. While the interior is pretty standard, it is nevertheless comfortable and is, therefore, the perfect place to enjoy a hearty soup and fresh sandwich. For lunch, I ordered the soup du jour (cream of celery) and the PookyCake classic (ham & swiss sandwich). In my experience, cream of celery is usually pretty bland, but the version I had here at Dad’s Soups and Sangys was off the charts delicious. It was wholesome, rich and hearty. Coupled with the PookyCake classic, it made for an excellent lunch-time repast. I should offer a brief comment on the sandwich: As noted, I had the ham & Swiss, made with freshly baked brown bread. The sandwich was loaded with ham, Swiss cheese, cucumber slices, diced onion, shredded lettuce, mustard, mayo and pepper (see attached photo), though not to excess. Because of their freshness, all the ingredients sang together in unison, making for a mouth-watering bite each time. I confess I struggled to finish! You may have to take your sandwich home for dinner ;) As I sat and finished my lunch, it became abundantly clear to me that this establishment is obviously a popular takeout spot for lunch. Many – and I mean MANY – patrons came in and got many a soup and sangy to go. And who could blame them? After dining here, I was able to see, only too clearly, how and why this place has become a local lunchtime favourite. FOOD: 5/5 SERVICE: 4/5 VALUE: 5/5 RECOMMENDATION: It takes an extraordinary talent to make something as basic as a soup and sandwich seem special. But, as you smell the aromas of hearty soups and fresh baked breads wafting through the air, you know the folks at Dad’s Soups and Sangys have done it right. And I’m glad I had the opportunity to attend when I did because, since my visit, I’ve learned the original owner retired at the end of February and the business has since been sold to someone else.
