I've been to Mutsuki-An about half a dozen times since I discovered it last year. Every meal has been fresh, attractively presented, and uniquely flavourful. This small gem in Cadboro Bay (just down Sinclair Avenue from the University of Victoria) is a family run restaurant....There aren't a lot of seats, but that ensures a level of service that you won't get in a large bustling place. The restaurant itself is uncluttered and welcoming, with maybe 8 tables. The decor is casual, with a lot of light wood and pale walls that creates a clean and restful ambience. One of the owners welcomes people warmly, and is happy to explain anything on the menu. You can hear the clatter of cooking in the kitchen. The music playing in the background is soft. The food is absolutely fresh, and all the dishes are presented attractively. Portions are small, but the quality is superb. The different combinations of ingredients and flavours are tasty without overpowering the freshness of the dish. No deep fried, battered or over-sauced food here, just top notch raw or lightly cooked fish, meat and vegetables. The prices are at the high end of the sushi restaurant scale, but you are paying for quality of ingredients and preparation, and you won't be disappointed if that is something that matters to you. I highly recommend this small, delightful restaurant.
