Located right across from the pretty upscale shopping emporium of Oakridge, and with a potential wealthy Chinese clientele, one wonders why a streetside noodle house would aim so low. Walking in, the first thing I noticed beyond the bright lighting and formica topped tables, was...that the clientele was all Asian. A good sign, I thought. Then I saw the signs "No outside food", and "Cash only" rudely scrawled in bad handwriting. Curiously, there were two very good abstract pictures hanging, but the curtain separating the kitchen from the front had a Mickey Mouse motif. The menu featured such things as marinated large intestine and pork ear+chili sauce, also sliced prok (sic) with garlic.. I asked for Chinese tea- they did not have it, just hot water!! For dinner, I settled on A11- Taiwanese Fried Rice Noodle, but only after asking what it contained. I was assured it was like 'special fried rice' ie a bit of everything. The only operant word was 'bit'- there were bits of gluey noodles, bits (and I mean really small bits) of beef, and bits of onion, on a small plate. It arrived so fast, the noodles had obviously been sitting, and the topping ladled on in all its diminutiveness. The taste was also diminutive; there was almost no flavour. The bill- $6.50. I guess one can't expect much for that price. But at the food courts in Metrotown or Richmond you get scrumptious three item plus rice meals in that price range. There are lots of good noodle houses out there. It gives pause: Why open a restaurant and then not deliver?More
