There are too many bars and restaurants that are squeaky clean and stripped of atmosphere everywhere you go so I was pleasantly surprised when I walked into The Ironwood for the first time last night to check it out. Gazing about at the ancient interior,...wide wooden stage, and photo decorated walls, I found myself wondering about the original history of this place, as it hasn't seemed to have deviated too far from it's Garry Theatre roots thanks to the foresight of the owner. Were the curtains hanging at the back of the stage as old as they appeared? When was the stage built? Just a tour of the building itself would be reason enough to visit. How many ghosts were still wandering through this building? It was refreshing to be plunged into the past almost to the point that I wasn't aware of the open mic performance in front of me. There could have been more choices on the menu for drinks, however, as I asked for a cooler or a cocktail and was directed to beer, which I don't drink, or wine that I might have once a month, although the staff offered to prepare a cocktail and were friendly and prompt. I settled on the house wine which was adequate. A healthy choice on the food menu seemed to be a Caesar salad but I kept wishing I'd stayed home and pulled some romaine from my garden in order to get the freshness I'm used to. However, I managed to get a drink and a salad for around $20, which was my limit for the night. I kept reminding myself that I wasn't really there for the food or drink, or even the open mic music, which was a duo that had worked out their songs well enough so I shouldn't complain. I was simply exploring Inglewood and it's attractions. I may not have found anything unique in the either the food, drink or entertainment but did find it in the atmosphere of the Ironwood.
