We were in the Chinatown doing some business and I asked the agent where she goes for lunch. One of the places mentioned was the Golden Garden on Main Street, in the heart of Chinatown. We arrived around 2:00PM on a Friday and the restaurant...was basically empty except for maybe a half dozen patrons. This is a self serve restaurant. You order off the sandwich board, pay and your meal is brought to your table. The 2 of us ordered the following: • Custom beef pho ($11) – add your own ingredients, choose one or all of the beef proteins for the same price. I ordered the beef pho with rare striploin, brisket, tripe, tendon and meatball. Average tasting broth. I’ve had better. • BU 6 ($11.50) – stir fried lemon grass beef, shredded vegetables and bean sprouts over vermicelli. Served with a fish sauce based dressing. Other protein options include chicken and pork. An average tasting dish with nothing really bad to say about the dish but could have been more flavourful. The total bill was $23.63 (including taxes) before the tip. Breakdown of rating • Food quality and taste – average; 3 out of 5 rating. • Value vis-à-vis price portion size – average; 3 out of 5 rating • Service – order arrived in a timely manner; above average 3.25 out of 5 rating In my opinion, just an average restaurant with really nothing to rave about – 3 out of 5 rating. Notes & Tips: • Self serve tea • Credit cards accepted • Seating for 70 plus patrons • Check out the website • Washrooms are downstairs (about 15 steps). Didn’t notice any elevator access. • Metered street parking is available if you can find a spot. There are a few pay parkades within 3 blocks. • Restaurant is close to Science World and the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Garden attractions.
