Have been seeing this small restaurant for many months and finally ventured to go and eat there. I am always wary of eating in Indian restaurants and have found very few that are genuine. There are at least half a dozen of them sprinkled around...Bloor, and most of them are pretentious of Indian cuisine. So it was with great trepidation that I entered Maja. Maja is the classic railway bogie, with the kitchen/service counter placed in the middle. Had to call the lady behind the counter to clean up the table which was one minus point. The menu is quite limited with the normal tandoori chicken, mutton and chicken curry and of course the butter chicken. Chicken and Veg Biryani are also available. We decided to order the Non Veg Thali, a combo of two non veg dishes and one veg dish with salad, rice and nan. Ordered the lamb curry, the butter chicken and the Chole. Also ordered a half Tandoori, which came with two drumsticks and two breast pieces. Nan along with the Tandoori. What surprised me is the very distant attitude of the gentleman behind the counter. He appeared to be the owner and carries a respectable age. But several attempts to engage him in conversation went absolutely no where. The service seemed to be done grudgingly which put me off terribly. But the food for once was good. The Tandoori chicken was very well done, the Lamb curry was good, the Butter chicken lived up to its name and the Nan was nice, warm and fluffy. Would definitely order food from here, but never again will I sit and eat here.
