Came here for an early birthday celebration literally an hour and a half ago. While I’ve only had high tea experiences at the Fairmont (San Francisco and Victoria, respectively) the Secret Garden was a more down to earth atmosphere. They’ve got an array of selection...for teas (I had the Buckingham which was a blend of earl grey, jasmine and green tea) and a well thought out array of savoury and sweet treats which changes with the season. (We had egg salad pinwheels, roast beef and gruyere croissants, smoked tuna salad on dill biscuits, cheese and chive scones, cranberry scones, pumpkin pie with streusel, German chocolate cake roulade and lemon tarts.) Are they full English high tea, no (we are in Vancouver after all) but it’s a lovely and sophisticated experience to unwind and pretend you’re fancy with the fine antique China and doll sized utensils. (Taking multiple bites of miniature food also heightens the tea experience.) I found the food selection and a pot and a half of tea to be filling enough but I also wasn’t expecting a full sized meal of finger sandwiches and scones. They’re almost always packed on the weekends so reservations are a definite necessity.
