I recently had the opportunity to dine at Ten on the recommendation of a friend who had come away impressed with his experience. He did not exaggerate. This restaurant presented me with the most unique meal I have had in recent memory - be it...in Toronto or elsewhere. The menu focuses on carefully sourced vegetables, herbs and grains that are composed into unique and creative dishes that embrace the best of what Ontario has to offer. The bar for achieving success with this approach and having it appeal to both vegetarians and non-vegetarians, alike, is very high, but this restaurant and its chefs achieve just that. Rather than trying to make vegetables bend and submit to mass appeal by frying them, or changing their form such that they mimic a recognizable animal protein, these guys make them the star of the show by taking novel and well-conceived approaches to their preparation that make them shine for what they are. Yes, they will sometimes introduce a protein into the mix - on the night I was there we had duck. But the introduction of the protein is done in a way such that it is not a hard juxtaposition to your palate or the overall direction of the meal. The wine list is equally well conceived and approachably priced, focussing heavily on organic producers from France, Germany, Austria, and Italy, with interspersion from other regions. Finally a word on the chefs. These guys are young and creative, and their enthusiasm for what they are doing is pretty infectious. It's well worth your time to pull up a chair and experience it for yourself.
