My husband and I have gone for delightful dinners at Bul-Go-Gi House since the 1970s. It has been a popular “hole-in-the-wall” location for delicious and economical Korean food, and it was always crowded. Imagine my surprise when we walked in after a year’s absence to...find the restaurant virtually empty on a Saturday night at 6:30 p.m. We soon learned why. Under the new ownership, there is no longer complimentary small bowls of kimchi and bean sprout salad. The sticky rice that used to come with the meal also costs extra. We ordered the short ribs (Bulgalbi) and the fried mountain vegetables in a stone bowl (Dolsot Bibimbap). We also ordered a medium kimchi and medium bean sprout salad, since they no longer came with the meal. The Bulgalbi cost $27.00 and the Dolsot Bibimbap was $17.00. Kimchi cost us $10.00 (TEN DOLLARS!) and the bean sprout salad another $8.00. Dinner for two ran us $65.10 including GST, but before the tip. The food was ordinary, not delicious as it used to be. The bean sprout salad had no real taste whatsoever; it used to be tangy and addictive. Service was also slow and was poor, surprising with so few people in the restaurant when we were there. I am sorry to say that my husband I have now ended a very long era of visits to the Bul-Go-Gi House. We will miss it.
