On a night at The Nook on Yew in Kitsilano, one could almost forget we are in the midst of an awful international pandemic. Not that the Nook is not being sure to check diners’ vaccination cards, cleaning surfaces between uses and with staff wearing...masks. That they certainly are, but it manages with all those safety protocols in place to still create an atmosphere of ease and vibrancy, serving its tasty food, with its attentive and friendly servers keeping an eye out for requests, and with good music in the background. I sat at the bar this past Saturday evening where all seemed relaxed and happy to be out dining. I was asked to move up a seat soon after arriving to allow a group of three to sit together, which I was happy to do, of course, and all expressed gratitude to me. As noted, the vibes are good at the Nook. Having moved a seat, the seat next to mine was soon filled by someone, who had met me briefly before and we immediately got into profound and lively conversation, as one does at bars at their best. We has our meals; I had a sausage Za pizza, and my bar neighbor ordered one of the pastas. We both enjoyed our respective meals, and the top ups of of our respective beverages, as we discussed all manner of things. My pizza Sausage Za was a combination of three sausages made in-house accompanied by red peppers. Very nice. It was 25$. The Nook offers a range of pizzas, salads and pasta selections and, in addition, has specials of all of these each night. It also offers other items like olives and crostini with pâté. My beverage was Steal N Oak Shiny Things I PA at 7$ a sleeve. I came in early evening and left a good few hours later, having picked up some reading suggestions, and given a few, leaving more than satisfied on all levels, walking home in the rain Vancouver has been experiencing almost endlessly these last weeks, but not really noticing the weather, given my contentment after a fine evening out.
