my husband and i happened to ride our rented bikes along the docks of the old port and even i, as a southerner used to hot GA summers, had to admit it was hot in Quebec City. so as we rode by and i saw...folks lounging with afternoon cocktails and children splashing in what appeared to be perhaps a public fountain converted into a popup kiddie pool/tiki bar, i was already asking to go. they don't charge admission? i asked. there's food and pitchers of sangria? everyone is nice and no one is fighting and no broken glass or crying children? this is how you know you're in canada. we did have to wait a few minutes to snag some chairs in the water but it was worth it for the pitcher of sangria and cool water on our hot feet. i was worried something might happen to our stuff but it was all fine. i know this sounds silly but it was so unexpected in this old city, a bit of tropical whimsy in a place that sees just a couple months of warm weather, you could tell everyone was blissed out on it. i came back later, as the sun was setting, the children had gone home and couples were stretching their legs out on the chairs and sharing quiet conversations. there was a young man wearing a hawaiian shirt playing a keyboard, the trumpet, and guitar all at once. the music was mellow and lovely, i didn't understand what he said because it was all in french but it sounded wonderful too. funny how something so simple can be so magical.
