We want to love this place. We live close by, it has a nice ambience, a promising menu... but unfortunately we have had nothing but terrible experiences at Bar Wellington (Toronto). Tonight we decided to venture out for a late night French Onion soup (it...is actually delicious). We got there, and were seated in a nice two person booth. We waited FIFTEEN MINUTES before I MYSELF had to go find our server. I found her, and said we have been waiting for quite a while to place our order, to which she responds, "well, where are you sitting?".. Perhaps, I don't know, check your section more regularly? The place was certainly not busy. She then comes over, barely speaking to us - no apology, no small talk to excuse the FIFTEEN minute wait. Then we place our order. She comes back five minutes later to inform us that the Pan Bread was no longer being offered. Great, though it said it was their last day for having it, so, that was disappointing as well. At this point now we have been waiting for quite a while for our soup (which we are actually excited for), and wondering if she is going to come back to ask us if we maybe want anything to drink other than water... SO, the soup arrives (with the regular bread we ordered instead of the special Pan Bread), and as we knew - tasted lovely. Quite swiftly we finished our soup, and wait for our waitress to come back and check in (or at least do the "two bite check", to see how it was tasting - but at this point it is fully consumed). We have waited now an additional THIRTEEN minutes finishing our soup for her to come and take our dishes. And that, my friends, is the last time we saw our server. I was beginning to think we should call the manager to make sure she was okay? We saw her so infrequently I was beginning to think that maybe something had happened to her. Another TEN or so minutes go by, waiting for our bill so we can get home, and we've given up. We have to go to the bar - again - to acquire and pay our bill. Then when we got our bill, we are charged a "food mod" cost of $0.75, plus the two or three dollars for the bread. No idea what this was. Perhaps butter? Though we had never asked for butter. The bread was already on the bill, so what was this mysterious 75 cent charge? No idea. Obviously it wasn't the amount, it was just the fact that we had absolutely atrocious service, and then were charged ANYTHING above what the actual cost was with zero explanation. It truly is a shame that this ruined Bar Wellington for us, because it is so cozy and convenient, but we will not be going back. Beware the blonde waitress! Though, you may not even see her at all if she is helping you. (The previous time we went there we had a great waiter, mind you. But the food was entree's were terrible - win some you lose some?)More
