My wife's family is from north China, and in many years of marriage we have eaten a lot of excellent Chinese food. This is the one restaurant in Victoria that does a good job of the typical dishes we found in Beijing restaurants when we...were there a year ago. -- Beijing Bistro does a good version of the national winter dish of North China: beef soup-noodles. -- I love their cumin beef. -- And the various buns and street food they do are good: sesame-seed pancake with beef; "Chinese crepe" (jianbing guozi, a meal in itself); Chinese chive pancakes (jiucai hezi - on Chinese menu). -- Their duck soup with green-onion tortillas is a revelation (also from the Chinese menu). -- If you like a spicy salad, try the simple pickle-like appetizer of "potato salad" (julienned potatoes in hot-pepper oil: crisp but tender). Last time we went, my wife wanted a plain green vegetable, and they did baby bok choi with garlic for us that was as good as I have ever had it, with that special slightly-burnt flavour from a hot wok that we have never been able to achieve at home. If you want the same old Cantonese-American Chinese food you've always had, don't go here. This is authentic ordinary northern and northeastern Chinese food, at a similar high standard to what you find in restaurants in Beijing.
