We came here for dinner after my daughter saw all the floral arrangements outside the restaurant signifying it was a new business. The restaurant has been open for 3 days on the site that was the previous ROC seafood restaurant, a Cantonese restaurant. We arrived...around 6:30 with a reservation on a cold Sunday evening and there were about half dozen people waiting for tables. By the time we finished dinner the restaurant had emptied. The four of us ordered the following: • #16 – Dai Chin spicy chicken ($13.95) – chicken stir fry with onion and green peppers and re-hydrated dried red chilies. Not overly spicy and taste-wise average. I thought this dish was slightly on the small side. • #31 – Braised beef brisket & beef tendon hot pot ($15.95) – tasted okay, tender beef. There was no lo bok (daikon / radish) only the beef protein and lettuce. This dish was okay but I have had better at other restaurants. • #33 – Deep fried tofu with chili pepper salt ($12.95) – slightly crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside with lots of sliced jalapeno peppers. I normally don’t mind salt but I did find it more salty than I am used to. My daughter thought the salt content was as expected. • #81 - Braised E-Fu noodles with 3 kinds of mushrooms ($13.95) – average tasting dish • #41 – Braised spicy green beans ($14.95) – A green bean stir fry with minced pork that was not spicy at all. This is NOT a vegetarian dish as we had thought. Make sure you ask if the dishes are vegetarian as it appears some menu items' descriptions have been “lost in translation”. I informed the manager(?) about the errant description on the dish we ordered and she made a note. The e-fu noodle dish came with a hot drink such as coffee, Hong Kong style coffee, etc. For the beverage, my daughter ordered the cold honey lemon water (extra $1 charge for cold drink). It was really sweet, so much so, that she added more liquid to dilute the sweetness. The specialty dishes – 16, 31, 33 and 41 came soup of the day and steamed rice. The soup of the day was a beef broth with lotus root which was tasty. The bill came to $67.80 after a 10% discount (for the month of November) but before the tip. Ratings breakdown: • Food taste/quality – average. Three of us ended up with dry mouths normally associated with the use of the flavour enhancer MSG. The 4th person did not have a dry mouth. An acquaintance we saw at the restaurant also did not have a dry mouth. • Price vis-à-vis portion size – average value maybe slightly on the small side but not by too much. Our acquaintance thought the servings were smaller. • Service – food arrived in a timely manner and teacups were refilled The overall rating is slightly above average – 3+ out of 5 rating. Notes & Tips • Hong Kong style cafes serves “Western” style meals including New York steak, breakfast and sandwiches. • Extensive menu • Cash and debit card only.
