While visiting Winnipeg, my husband and I went for breakfast on a Sunday morning at The Dawning. Our hotel restaurant was closed due to Covid so I googled breakfast restaurants in St. James & thought we would support a local/family run business. Good location on...Portage Avenue in St. James, with parking either in the lot or on the street. When we arrived we were seated in a booth (masks currently required). The restaurant appears to be family fun and perhaps used to be a Chinese food establishment? We thought the price of $8.75 for a full breakfast was very reasonable, our orders arrived quickly and the food was delicious. Our orange juices came in a bottle (odd) and coffee was decent. The atmosphere inside was somewhat grungy - I attempted to use the ladies washroom but there was no toilet paper. I let our server/the owner know but he never did take the time to put toilet paper in there. My husband ended up getting me some from the men's washroom instead. The washroom also has one of those old cloth dispenser rolls to wipe your hands - haven't seen one of those in 20 years! We were a bit surprised our bill came to over $30, since our meals were only $17.50. Quite few regulars come here - not sure if we would return next time we visit Winnipeg.
