Kitsilano is very lucky to have three very good sushi restaurants within blocks of one another, all in the Cornwall area. I am fortunate to live steps away from all three. Octopus’ Garden is on Cornwall, just off Maple; Moltan, which opened last November, is...one block East, just off Walnut; and Kibune a few blocks west, off Cornwall at Yew. It is difficult to make comparisons, as all are so good, and all have interesting and specific additions. Prices range and the selections are different. OG has the most extensive selection of wines and whiskeys available but one can certainly find something good to drink at all three. Moltan has some great cocktails, and its Lavender is my favorite. It also has beers on tap. OG is more expensive but has a wider selection of dishes with many eccentric offerings but Moltan, too, has a nice range of dishes, as does Kibune. Owner/Chef at OG is the charismatic, Sada, who is supported by a great staff, with a wonderful Maitre D. All staff are welcoming. Owner/ chef David is at the helm at Moltan, is friendly, turning out great sashimi and sushi dishes with dedication and focus, ably assisted by a great staff of seven, preparing good and fresh dishes at good prices, and serving it with grace. In addition, customers get a complimentary small bowl of miso soup, and a lemon and hot water drink to go. A wonderful bonus. David and his staff hail from South Korea, as is often the case with Japanese restaurants in Vancouver, showing they know Japanese cuisine with the best of them. Kibune has a legendary owner/chef, who has remained at the helm since 1982, staying the course over 40 years this coming July. He is now supported by his very gracious nephew, recently relocated from Japan. The signature roll at OG is the Sada roll at 20$; the Kibune roll is 14$ and the House roll at Moltan is 12$. I have had them all, and all are delicious. There is lots more besides, at all three, just as tasty. All three places are fairly small spaces, and it can be difficult to get in. So it is best to reserve. Moltan is open every day from noon til 9pm, with a staff break from 3pm to 4:30 pm in the week but it is open all through from Friday to Sunday. OG is happily open on Mondays, closing on Tuesday and Wednesday, and open from 5pm to 8 pm. Kibune is not open on Mondays. It has recently opened an extension to its patio, which is charming. OG also has a charming patio, and an equally charming tucked away and private room patrons can dine at. Three is a lucky number. Go to all three, often, or as often as you can get in. Take aways are also available, and all do a brisk business on that front too. Posted by S FullerMore
