The Ovaltine Cafe is a shining oasis in a sea of misery. Located on one of the worst blocks of Vancouver's East Hastings, the cafe has been around since 1942 or so and retains it's original booths and counter. You may have to step over...some homeless people parked out in front but it's worth the effort. Nothing fancy, a simple breakfast and sandwich/burger menu. I had corned beef hash and eggs at a reasonable $9.00 and returned the next day for a cheeseburger and onion rings @ $10.00. It's been used as a location for several films and TV shows as well. The owner is very pleasant and takes pride in her business. Also a chance to see some of the last remaining neon in this neighbourhood. East Hastings is not for the faint of heart.
