The Kitsilano Cornwall area’s sushi-lovers are in very safe & competent hands when they dine out locally. Between Cypress & Yew there are three committed & inspired sushi owner/chefs looking out for them, making sure they receive fresh & enticing dishes, & that they are...protected, having Covid protocols safely in place. All, of course, want to see vaccination passports at the entrance. Kibune’s Enid has been in the area the longest. This next July his restaurant, Kibune, will turn 40. It has operated from the same space, one in from Cornwall on Yew, & Enid has been at the helm all those years, fastidiously chopping & creating behind the restaurant’s long bar, helped out now by his nephew, who makes the cooked offerings & handles much of the serving. He has recently located here from Japan, aiming to make Vancouver his new home. Enid may be kept busy chopping & creating but he does not forget to give his customers a welcome nod, often giving regulars a little something extra. I like its Kibune roll at 14$ & its real crab Californian roll, accompanied by a beer or two whenever I go in. There is lots to choose from & all is good. Talking good food & birthdays, sushi neigbours, just east of him on Cornwall, are also soon having birthdays. Owner/chef, the charismatic Sada, will soon celebrate his Octopus’ Garden’s 30th birthday, & David, owner/chef of the very successful, new, Moltan, which opened a year ago last December, will celebrate his restaurant’s first birthday this November. Happy birthday to all these fine sushi places. May they all live very long lives. I have long loved all food Japanese, since first going to a Japanese restaurant in my 20s, in the early 80s, when Japanese food was not as easy to find. Vancouver, as is known, has many fine establishments, which include another legendary owner/chef Tojos of Tojo’s, which also has many birthdays under its belt. I raise a glass to all of these Vancouver chefs for their culinary art & their great hospitality. I am delighted that my two grandchildren are following in my appreciative steps, & have inherited my genetic palate & culinary genes. They sent a pic of them eating sushi my granddaughter had made, eating her creations with fancy chopsticks I had sent them. There was, on seeing the pic, nothing for it but to scout out Japanese groceries to send to help them continue their creations. I found the wonderful Japanese food store, Konbiniya, & with its wonderful manager, Kenji, Japanese delights were soon making their way to the west coast of VI, where my son & his family live. I then enlisted the aid of staffers at the great Indigo Robson to ferret out interesting & edgy sushi books to send, which they did with enthusiasm. All of these fine places selling delicious Japanese edibles draw customers locally, nationally & internationally. All are worth a visit no matter where you come from. Posted by S FullerMore
