Our family with four generations present visited this local Point Grey restaurant for an enjoyable evening meal. The menu has a good variety of the dishes you would expect. Dinners for one two or more and a good variety seafood, pork, beef and tofu favourites....The service was excellent and the waitress even indulged my daughter-in-law by conversing with her in Mandarin. The décor was somewhat of a surprise in that it was more of a bistro setting than a traditional Chinese restaurant. There is a second floor eating area for those who like a little more privacy. My only really negative complaint is on more of a personal note. I find the presence of a TV screen in a restaurant a bit distracting and unappealing. Chinese restaurants are more about families eating and enjoying conversing together than they are about basketball games (even with the sound turned off.) I can understand the difference in opinions about the food here as some dishes were excellent, some were very good and others were just so… so. We ordered share dishes for everyone but my son who is on a restricted diet. His questions about the food ingredients and preparation techniques were answered quickly and honestly by our server. In our experience this is unusual as most servers don’t have a clue how the dishes are prepared and what sauces and spices are used and must consult with the kitchen staff. Heaven help anyone with food allergies if they get it wrong. The house rice dish was superb in fact it was probably the best rice dish I have encountered. I could have made this dish a meal of it on its own as it contained generous portions of both veggies and meat. The pork spare ribs were ok (few were a little too fatty) and I found the sauce too bland. We also had the traditional beef with broccoli to please my mother. This dish was the first to disappear as the broccoli was cooked just right but I found the meat to be over tenderized and sauce to be very bland. Some oyster sauce and/or other spices could have added a little zeal. The tofu with eggplant was very good. My son who said at the outset wasn’t very hungry polished off his pork dish and insisted on helping us with the vegetable tofu. All in all it was an enjoyable meal for a reasonable price. I would recommend the Ginger and Chili.
