I stumbled across Kathy’s quite by chance. My sister was driving us from YVR to our hotel when she spied the “Sushi Master” on West Broadway and then immediately noted “Kathy’s Sandwich House” right next to it. Given the connection of that name to family...(even the same spelling for “Kathy”), I decided then and there that I’d have to patronize Kathy’s at some point in the future. Well, “at some point” turned out to be the following month. But more on that in a moment. According to their official website, Kathy’s Sandwich House has been serving the Fairview area “for more than a decade.” Where the heck have I been? And more importantly, why haven’t any of the city’s notable food bloggers written a single word about this place? Seriously, I find that shocking. A hip new eatery – or major chain coming to the city – gets significant hype and press, but a home-grown local shop that’s been around for 10+ years gets nary a word. I also find this lack of press surprising because what HAS been written about Kathy’s, from “everyday writers” like you and me, on forums like Google and Yelp is generally very positive. Most writers on those platforms have put over the friendly service, fresh ingredients, and overall wholesome eats. My experience at Kathy’s very much reflects these sentiments. When I arrived, it was late afternoon and the lunch rush had long since expired. As such, I had the place all to myself. Kathy’s is a very small shop and is clearly more of a takeout than dine-in establishment; however, there are a couple of countertop seats, which could accommodate maybe 3-5 people pre-COVID. Given that we’re in the midst of a pandemic, though, Kathy’s is currently takeout only, which probably suits them just fine. The menu at Kathy’s is fairly extensive, but focuses on four primary areas: Soups, sandwiches, wraps and salads. The soup selection is usually limited to two options, but both are made in-house. The salads are pretty standard and include garden, Greek, Caesar, Chef and Spinach. The wraps include chicken, turkey, veggie, and shrimp. Kathy’s sandwiches – the namesake of this establishment – run the gamut of poultry, red meat and vegan options. The menu also highlights fresh-squeezed juices, which you can get to accompany any sandwich or wrap for a wholesome meal. I decided to get 3 sandwiches for myself and the folks: Roast beef, Turkey and Ham & Cheddar (AKA the PookyCake classic). The sandwiches were made to order and featured a number of fresh, vibrant greens, including lettuce, cucumbers, spinach and pickles. I appreciated the final touch of putting each sandwich in a Panini press to give them lovely “grill” marks. When it came to taste, I felt the sandwiches exceeded expectations. My ham & cheddar tasted fresh, the mayo was evenly distributed, as were the veggies. It made for a most satisfying bite. Similarly, the folks enjoyed their respective sandwiches as well. Indeed, with a quality product like Kathy’s on West Broadway, why would you patronize any of the fast-food joints nearby? FOOD: 4/5 SERVICE: 5/5 VALUE: 4/5 RECOMMENDATION: Kathy’s Sandwich House does sandwiches and they do them well. Of course, this really shouldn’t be surprising; after all, how could they have operated for over a decade and still be here if they weren’t any good? If I want a quick bite that goes beyond fast-food on West Broadway, I know where I’m going. Highly recommended!
