I decided to try Zawa for brunch after reading their menu. The restaurant is surprisingly large, and curiously outfitted with a mixture of late 20th century fittings, featuring what must surely be the largest booths on Commercial Drive. Before noon, the place was quiet, but...there seemed to be a steady stream of customers. The outdoor tables were plentiful, but unoccupied. They would be very pleasant on a warm summer evening, no doubt, but in March, not so appealing. The menu was varied, but not so big that that you would wonder how often the cook had prepared a given dish. The Eggs Benedict I tried were particularly good, the product of obvious skill and practise. Service was friendly, and even the coffee (which at many restaurants is something to be avoided) was fresh, hot and strong enough, albeit of an indistinct character. All in all, dining was a pleasant experience, the food and service being at least as good as most places--and I found myself wondering why people weren't rushing through the door to eat at Zawa. There is a disconnect here. Perhaps the walls need to become gallery spaces? There is lots of room for entertainment, but something seemed to be missing. Free Wifi? Morph into a brew pub? Hard to say, but I do hope the owners put some thought into it. There's no reason why Zawa should not be well-known and busy. I will definitely be back to try more of the menu.
