My wife and I went to Formosa on Saturday night with another couple. It is a smallish restaurant with tasteful and interesting decor. VERY authentic Taiwanese cuisine. The waiter was extremely helpful, describing dishes to us and helping us to make great selections. He actually...provided the table with several complimentary items we hadn't actually ordered because he thought we would like them. We started out with Taiwanese Popcorn Chicken and Spicy Wontons. Both were VERY good. The popcorn chicken has great flavor and texture! They knocked it out of the park with both dishes. Two of us at the table had the Beef Noodles in Stewed Broth (a soup). My friend living in Taiwan tells me this is a very common dish where he lives and really kind of defines Taiwanese cuisine. It was great! My only complaint is that I wish I had ordered the large bowl instead of the small. I found myself wanting more. But that's on me. My buddy had Steamed Basa Fillet with Scallions and Ginger, Doused with Hot Oil, which is a piece of fish. We all had a taste and it was really nicely done. After a little while the waiter asked if he would like some rice with it, and that made his meal complete. My wife had the Gua Bao, which was a bit of a stretch for her (she doesn't often go for food she is not familiar with). The waiter recommended it. She ended up eating less than half because she was full. I finished it and I found myself once again wanting more. The sweet flavor of the steamed bun complimented the flavors of the meat and fillings to a tee. Two of us at the table had Plum Coke, which is a glass of cola with dried plum. A great flavor combination. We had two deserts, but I cannot find either on their online menu. One was a toast with sweet topping. Brilliant! The other was like a cocktail bun you get at dim sum restaurants. Also very tasty. Here's the rub. We were there at dinner time on a Saturday night, and for most of the time we were there the place was empty. Come on Edmonton. If we don't support little gems like this, we will lose them. If you are looking for something different, with great flavors, and a great value, this is the place for you. Please go out and try Formosa Bistro. You will not be disappointed!More
