I have recently been joyfully getting gifts and delights for my two grandchildren — 9 and 12– and while feeling good about the nice array in the collection I have brought together over the past week — from great climate change books, to edgy sushi...recipe books, to imaginative Japanese offerings, to health-promoting YuZu juice — I wanted to just add some OMG confectionaries or cookies to the mix. Lucky me — I stumbled across The Cake And The Giraffe (The C&TG) with the name immediately catching my eye. It specializes mostly in wedding cakes and custom-crafted special cakes but I was again lucky to call just after hours and get to speak to the owner Dalana. While a crafted cake was not a possibility because it would need to be shipped across land and sea to the west coast of Vancouver, Dalana told me she could make me custom-crafted cookies, with a minimum order of 12 for each selection. She listed some options. All sounded delicious. I loved the offering of pink peppercorn shortbread, and of lavender shortbread, so I ordered a dozen of each in heart shapes. My granddaughter, is 13 on 12/12, and my son and daughter-in-law have their 16th anniversary on December 15. So perfect gifts for those two occasions. The C&TG ship through Canada Post, making sure the goods are well protected from deterioration. Dalana suggested the shortbread be frozen, if they were to be quarantined for a time, as my d-I-law likes to do with anything which comes into the home. They are fine, if kept that way and defrost quickly in room temperature, she said. The C&TG also makes up boxes of assorted confectionary on Valentine’s Day and Easter, with prices at around 40$. Dalana has owned the business for some 13 years and has worked in the industry for a few years before that, thus making her something of a veteran in the business. Business is by appointment only. It was great finding the right selection of handcrafted cookies, and I now wait with excitement for the reviews, which will be forthcoming when the tasty morsels are consumed on the west coast.
