For me, Mr.

For me, Mr. Sub is something of a Canadian icon. When it comes to both service and flavour, they’re so far ahead of the competition that, if they looked back, they’d need binoculars to see them. Yet, this is something of a paradox because despite...all of the goodness that they bring, they’ve fallen well behind Subway, at least as far as location numbers go in this country (222 vs 2,563). We need to ask: “Why is this? How can something so bland and so tasteless [Subway] far outnumber home-grown goodness in Mr. Sub?” The answer to this question is relatively easy to answer and has nothing to do with quality of product; rather, it all has to do with the corporate machine behind the far larger MNC. Advertising and propaganda does much, be it in large city or small town. Indeed, the propaganda machine has worked wonders in my home Province of BC. Once upon a time, Mr. Sub was a shining star in my province but, in the last decade and a half, it has been reduced to a mere rump of two locations. In essence, Mr. Sub has become a treat. That is why I tend to go out of my way whenever visiting Alberta – where this franchise is doing much better – to patronize a Mr. Sub location. And so I did just that and visited the unit at 619 16 Avenue NE. Following a fine flick at the Cineplex Odeon Sunridge, I came to this location because it was less than 5-minutes away. The restaurant, as with all Mr. Sub units I’ve visited, was well lit, neat and tidy. I was also happy to see that this location appeared fairly popular, with many patrons coming in to get a hearty sub to go. In any event, after consulting the attractive and well laid out menu, I settled on the classic pizza sub sandwich. The two sandwich artisans were congenial, courteous and efficient, helping me to build my sub exactly the way I wanted it, replete with only the freshest ingredients. The sandwich was delicious and full of flavour, unlike that other sub place. The fresh pizza sausages complemented the other ingredients nicely, resulting in a beautiful gestalt. It is for reasons such as this that I will continue to go out of my way to eat at Mr. Sub whenever I know one is in the area: the subs are of excellent quality; they actually have flavour; and I will always support local (Canadian) over corporate America (Subway) any day. FOOD: 5/5 SERVICE: 5/5 VALUE: 5/5 RECOMMENDATION: As one other reviewer of the Mr. Sub franchise has put it, “Bravo Mr. Sub! Better and better! Fresher and fresher!” Indeed, Mr. Sub is Canadiana at its best. For subs that do more than merely “phone it in,” come here. They are far, far better than the competition. Highly recommended!
