We went to the Cantine on Sherbrooke street with the kids and a couple of friends. Nice rustic decor with a somewhat modern feel. Tables are solid wood and the restaurant can accomodate a variety of party sizes. There is also a bar if you...want to just pop in for a cocktail. If you do, I highly recommend the French 90 especially if you are in the mood for something on the sweet side. The poutine for La Poutine Week was absolutely delicious but unfortunately does not seem to be part of their standard menu. Otherwise they have a varied and affordable lunch menu, lots of choices for vegetarians/vegans and an oyster special on Wednesdays ($1/piece) which I will definitely have to go back to try without the ankle biters(kids). If you are trying to find parking there's plenty of parking meters or you can get lucky and park on Simpson in the appropriate section at the appropriate time for free (bring a cryptologist to ensure you interpret the parking signs properly).
