History

Established in 1951.

Lukes Drug Mart is the oldest independent pharmacy in Calgary. As it has been family run since the beginning, it has provided a friendly atmosphere and noticeable warmth that can only be experienced when dealing with a small business. The original location has become an integrated part of Bridgeland that has grown along with the community and will continue to for decades to come.

Jim Lukes first established the pharmacy in Bridgeland in 1951. Over the next decade, a lunch counter was also operated in the store. In addition, Lukes Drug Mart ran a nearby variety store in the DeWaal block.

Throughout the 1960s, a part of the store was rented out and turned into a doctor’s office. Another part became a beauty salon. However, this did not last long and doctors’ offices were taken over during the 70s.

Many changes came to the store in 1985 when Jim Lukes passed his business venture on to his son Bob, who took over its operations.

My all time favourite one stop shop in the neighbourhood. Great for your morning cappuccino and fresh baked scone, funky gifts, vinyl records, post office needs, pharmacy needs, groceries and food in the basement, etc etc. This place has it all and the staff are super chill.

One day, I received a tip that this charming Bridgeland drug store carried the only drug I need. Vinyl. It’s been over a year since I first learned this little secret, and in that time, my curiosity in this audio black gold has spun out of control into a full-on addiction. I am now forced to make special stop at Luke’s every single time I’m in the area. It wasn’t long before I started experimenting with another “”””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””black gold”””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””” available at this Portland microcosm: Their tasty, tasty coffee. I would stop first at the counter and pick up a Stumptown americano (now carrying Four Barrel Coffee – still wicked good) to keep me caffeinated while I scoured for my next LP fix. I continued down this path for the good part of a year. Luckily, I was fortunate enough to come to the lifesaving, albeit somewhat sad realization that many an audiophile never gets to experience: You can’t live off of records and coffee alone. And while Luke’s doesn’t carry whisky, they do have this bourbon barrel aged maple syrup that is out of this world! The only time I found myself doing something other than drink it straight from the bottle was to give my espresso smooth, sweet little kick, but I digress. Sooner or later, you’re gonna get hungry. Sooner or later you’re gonna need to go out into that real world, and hopefully you do the rest of the world a favour by showering before you do. Luke’s has got your (plaid-covered) back. Mixed in with an assortment of staples you’d find at any drug store are hand-crafted, small-batch, organic, vintage-throwback ANYTHING. Last visit, I picked up some of the finest Portlandian shaving cream (for those of you who opt for the ironic moustache instead of the beard), some organic apple cider vinegar, a St. Vincent record, and some run-of-the-mill toilet paper. Mission accomplished. Oh yah, and also drugs.”””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””

Cute little store with lots of cool and unique finds. Lots of local products which is really awesome! I love checking out the grocery items downstairs because there’s so many items you can’t find elsewhere. The coffee is great and reasonable. I tried their swirl vanilla and coconut charcoal soft serve which was quite tasty.
