Back in 1987, this strip mall opened on a rainy weekend to empty fanfare. I remember it well as I was hired as part of a jazz quartet to celebrate the grand opening. It was a sad gig. Fast forward to today and 30 years...later I am back to try this dim sum restaurant. First impressions were favourable; large, airy dining hall with white tablecloths. And then it went downhill. First, we didn't have napkins with our place settings... never rectified. After, selecting our order we had to vigorously get a servers attention to give them our chosen dishes. Service was consistently poor. No one refilled our teapot, no one cleared our empty dim sum dishes, and I had to call someone over to pay the bill. Now to the food... Shrimp dumplings (Ha Gow): very large and impressive but on the dry side and tasteless. Pork dumplings (Siu Mai): equally large and impressive... and quite juicy and flavorful. No complaints. Chicken feet (Fung Jiao): let's face it, it's all about the flavours in the sauce and the tender texture of the flesh. Disappointed here; again a little dry and flavorless. Sticky rice in leaves: not bad. A little skimpy on the preserved egg but otherwise, tasty, aromatic and cooked to proper stickiness. Steamed BBQ pork buns: not huge but the quality is commendable. Gai lan and pork in rice noodles: lots of noodles; not so much of the good stuff. Otherwise, acceptable taste. Price is on the average scale In conclusion, Vancouver is a foodie mecca. To stand out as one of the memorable eating experiences in this city the establishment had better shine in one or more gastronomic areas. Fortune City doesn't... anywhere... at any time. It is one of a plethora of Chinese restaurants noted for indifferent service and mediocre food at an average price point. Three stars As for live jazz at this Chinese strip mall... never happened again!!!More
