Ovaltine Cafe is a trip back in time and I love the trip. Don't expect an exceptional culinary experience here but with expectations in check coffee and breakfast are just fine. Service in my experience has always been very good and I always tip generously...to show my appreciation and as the regular clientele from this area don't have the cash to splash around I feel anyone working here could use a good tip. The Ovaltine Cafe has been used as a set location for so many TV shows and movies over the years. Most recently I was watching The Man in the High Castle and they used the Ovaltine Cafe and The Smile Diner, another old school diner. Attempts have been made to bring the cafe into the Hipster realm but the Ovaltine just remains it's comfortable old self. I would be very sad should it ever go away. Also don't let the street population throw you. Many drug addicted and homeless in the area/on the streets but I've lived in the area for over 30 years and have never had a problem. Just keep in mind this is the poorest part of town and many levels of government have mismanaged the area, basically with decades of denying gentrification and renewal and creating a ghetto by concentrating social housing in the neighbourhood.
