I love dim sum, and I love to eat in a restaurant that is not overly busy where I feel rushed to munch everything down, pay, and leave. I have a small child and I need a place where he can eat his meal in...his own pace, and I can chat a little with family and friends... Star Anise in South Vancouver is a very good place to fit all those requirements of mine. Located near Kingsway and Tyne, parking is a little bit of an issue. There is underground parking, but we have never really used it. There are some street parking spaces, but they are quite limited. And ground parking in the restaurant's parking lot is basically unavailable. But as I have said, we did manage to find street parking during our several visits... Like most dim sum restaurants, you are given a checklist to choose from. The variety of food is plentiful, and prices vary between very inexpensive to somewhat pricey. Food quality is pretty decent. Like most Chinese restaurants, they have some better dishes than others... but for the most part, the quality is very good. I also like the fact that most items are not overly salty, something many Chinese restaurants are at fault of doing. The thing I like the most about the restaurant is that, even during peak hours, the restaurant is usually not overly crowded. What that means is: usually you do not have to wait to be seated, and you are almost never rushed to leave. For a change, one can actually sit, drink tea, and have a conversation with family and friends while eating. Located near where I live, I probably will be re-visiting Star Anise Restaurant in the not too distant future.
