My 91 year old mom, visiting from My 91 year old mom, visiting from Toronto, & I, had a wonderful lunch. The service was friendly and more than adequate; I was surprised that no one came to ask how our meal was, though. We had...our coffee and water refreshed a few times, so I thought it was odd. The food was excellent. I had the cedar plank steelhead and my mom had the tarragon chicken pot pie (one of her favourite things) and she loved it. My fish was perfect: moist, tender, with a perfectly crusted, crispy skin. I liked the fir emulsion and loved the "crushed potatoes," which were not what I expected at all, given the name. These were reminiscent of a potato galette, in rustic form. The cream sauce on top was delicious. The only disappointment was the battered cauliflower. The batter was light and crispy, but overall, the taste was bland and the cauliflower was a bit rubbery. As a former pastel chef, and my mom a massive dessert lover, even though we were full, we split a lemon tart. The taste was nice, but the custard was far from set: it was impossible to eat, without using our coffee spoons to scoop it up. The pastry was very tough, and we had to stab it vertically in order to split it, as we couldn't cut through it with a fork in the usual way. The fir pearls were novel, though. We both would be happy to return again, though. One dessert doesn't spoil the whole experience - even though, as my former mentor and Executive Pastey Chef used to say, "Sure, mains are important, but dessert is the last thing people remember."More
