The Nook in Kitsilano opened its doors to dine-in service on May 19, the first day B.C. government regulations allowed it, now offering reservations for the first time since it opened some eight years ago. The newly-instituted reservations system for its three seatings - 5...p.m., 6:30 & 8:15 p.m.- though are not easy to get, so best to go to its website at least a day in advance to acquire one. The first 2 seatings are limited to 1:12 hours & one cannot book more than three days in advance because of changing regulations, its website says, The Nook has had a steady queue for it’s takeaways which were offered on a scaled-down menu from its regular one these past 2 months, & its seems it will be as busy as it was with takeaways with its in-dining option. As per government regulations, it will be operating at 1/2 capacity, as are those that opened as well as soon as it was allowed, which included its neighbor, The Local, & Chewies, two blocks up at Yew @1st. There are 2 meters between its tables & a maximum of six in a party per table is allowed. Its hard-core fans of its pizza & pasta dishes are lining up now outside as well as online. The Kits neighborhood is seeing eateries opening up more generally with The Ellis opening on May 22, Brown’s Social House - five blocks up - on May 23, and The Boathouse on the beach on June 1. The neighborhood, though, has lost one of its dinning & Jazz hangouts. The Blue Martini will not reopened its doors again, something which is being bemoaned by its core of regulars. At a far smaller scale there is a newcomer to the vicinity. Chai Wagon, a food cart, which has written in Hindi an invite to customers to have conversations over chai, servers a terrific cuppa of the very popular Indian spices & rich tea. It is 3:50 & well worth the price. It also serves an assortment of snacks & is open from 10 a.m to 7 p.m, @ Yew & York, across the way from Kitsilano Natural Foods which has resumed a later closing time of 9 p.m. Other Kits favorites such as Au Comptoir on 4th & Kubune off Cornwall on Yew don’t have opening dates yet but are both offering their food fans a good range of takeout dishes. The Yew St. food corridor & surrounds become ever busier in this time of new normal. Posted by S FullerMore
