A friend of ours suggested DOSC (Drunken Ox, Sober Cat). The $7 coffee will be worth it, he said. The downtown parking is not too bad on weekends so my wife and I decided to give it a shot. Street parking on a Saturday afternoon...was available and inexpensive at a dollar an hour. The Café side (sober Cat) of the establishment has generously spaced tables and we were lucky to get one by the glass façade. The combination of the interior décor and the view of the street on a weekend that is not filled with vehicles almost made us want to order wine and but for the driving, we would have. So how can you improve a Café on a good location, good décor and great service? The ambience can be greatly improved by playing the appropriate music. Light Jazz or even classical would be perfect but the music was of the wrong genre and obtrusively loud at times. We ordered a couple of scones – a savory and sweet – and a couple of Americano Misto coffees. The scones were excellent. The server even warmed up the savory one – Cayenne and parmesan - and accompanied it with some nice spreadable butter. The sweet (a chocolate almond combo) was perfect in texture and taste. The coffee was disappointing. Too much milk almost ruined it and the coffee itself was weak. It was though, served nice and hot. The service was friendly and professional. Overall score for the Café was a 6 out of 10. We will be going back though to sample the espresso and perhaps hope for a coffee with a stronger kick and better music. I hope to give DOSC a better than average rating the next time around. By the way, the coffee prices are not too crazy. The $7 coffee referred to earlier must have been an unusual specialty.
